3 Steps to Spring You into Swimsuit Season

By: Tanya Burk

Are you ready to get into that swimsuit in a few short months? If you screamed, “NO!” try incorporating these 3 steps into your fitness routine to speed up your efforts!

  1. Fasted Cardio – Get up in the morning and do your cardio session BEFORE you eat breakfast! Research indicates that you can burn up to 20% more fat when you do this! Because your body is not processing or absorbing food and your insulin levels are at a minimum low in this fasted state, your body is more able to use fat stores as energy. Mobilizing and utilizing these internal fat stores will help you lower body fat by burning it away! Fasted cardio is sure to help you have more confidence to go poolside in no time!
  2. High Intensity Interval Training (HIIT) – Do quick burst of all out high intensity training followed by short recovery periods. Instead of staying on a cardio machine for countless minutes doing a steady state workout, try a HIIT session for added benefits! Some research indicates that just 15 minutes of HIIT can benefit a person more than an hour of steady state cardio. The benefits following an effective HIIT session are amazing! The intense exertion from the short, all-out high intensity bursts kick your body’s repair cycle into overdrive. This overdrive phase makes your body continue burning calories AFTER you finish the workout. Some studies report females burning extra calories for up to 24 hours after an intense HIIT session! This extra tool of HIIT will help you get your swagger spiced up for swimsuit season for sure!
  3. Eat less sugary, starchy carbohydrates/eat more fibrous carbohydrates & healthy fats – These little changes in your daily eating can transform your physique drastically! Sugary and starchy carbs cause belly bloat, and no one wants belly bloat in a swimsuit! Replace the sugary, starchy carbs with fibrous ones and not only will the belly bloat decrease, but you will have more regular bowel movements, yay! Incorporating healthy fats such as nuts, avocados, and coconut oil will increase your energy so you will in turn burn more calories! Your body utilizes what you feed it for fuel, so feeding it more (healthy) fats will train it to use fat for energy!
