Have you seen the commercial on TV that’s been on lately that asks how you would treat a car you owned if you knew that it would be the one and only car you would ever own your entire life? The commercial then goes on to compare that one car to the one body that you get. When you think about it, how WOULD you treat a car if you knew it was the only car you would ever own? Compare that to how you are currently taking care of your one and only body – the only one you will ever have. That’s kind of an eye opener, isn’t it?
Your one and only body – your healthy – is worth the investment of time and resources it takes to support it. If you don’t have
quality health, you don’t have quality life. Too many people think it’s too late, or that they are too old for any changes to make a difference. Not so. You can’t go back and undo what has already happened; however, the good thing is our body is not like a car – it can heal and regenerate. No matter the choices of yesterday, you have the power to change today! Those changes will affect the remainder of your life. Some people think they have plenty of time to worry about their health when it starts to deteriorate…that will be too late! It is never too early to start investing in your health. If you are reading this blog you probably already have some interest in health and fitness, but do you feel like you could up your game even more after reading the car analogy? Most people do….
What’s step 1? In my opinion, step 1 is determining your “why”. Why are you making changes? What motivation will drive you to complete a goal when it gets hard? Most people have a why that drives them to start the process. Some people struggle to find a why. Finding a why can be hard when everything seems to be going fine in life. I think of investing in your health like buying life insurance or saving for retirement. If you don’t do it now, you will pay for it later! If you don’t have a driving why forcing you to start devoting more time and resources into your health, you need to start taking care of it now using wisdom. Know that each step is an investment in your future self. Do it for a better quality of life later.
Once you have determined your why, now what do you do? Step 2 is developing a plan of action. Some people try to do research and determine a plan on their own. I highly recommend getting a professional to help you. I know, I know – this is a blog for a personal training business, BUT even if this wasn’t and I was just talking to you one on one, I would urge you to get help from a professional when developing a quality plan that is right for you. I was a client before I was on staff with TwinFitness. Taking that first step to work with a professional in the area of health and fitness was one of the best decisions I have made. It is a sacrifice, an investment, but once again – if you are not healthy nothing else matters.
Another reason why is it so important to work with a professional is because there is so much information out there; it is overwhelming! Working with a trained professional, who will listen to your needs and get to know what is best for you, is totally
worth it! You need someone who will get you on the right path, and keep you on it when times get tough – as they tend to do time to
time. You need someone who can see through the chaos of information, your excuses and weaknesses, and help you develop a plan that is as unique as you are!
Would you trust that one and only car to your own research? I doubt it. You would take that one and only car to a trained mechanic, whether it needed repairing or you were just investing in preventive maintenance. Your life is much more valuable than a car.
It is your one and only body. It is your one and only life. We all have the same 24 hours in a day. It is up to you to allocate a small percentage of that time each day in YOU! We all have different resources available to us. Look at your resources and see what you can do to determine a better future for yourself. It will be worth it – it is for the one and only you!
