12 Oct Turn Your New Year’s Resolution into a Lifestyle!

Well, here we are in the middle of January. How are you doing on your New Year’s resolutions? Because of my busy family schedule, I tend to be out in the community a lot. I am an outgoing person, so I talk to several people. It’s sad to say, but the majority of people I talk with about their progress in 2016 are already struggling. People share with me how they’ve failed once, then twice, and after a third time they feel like throwing in the towel. They feel guilty, defeated and worse off, hopeless that they can actually make a lifestyle change.
Success is possible though! At TwinFitness we care about helping people reach their personal goals and walking them through the process of change. As trainers we operate under the core values of committed, caring and confident. These values are powerful tools that you too can use to achieve your goals:
Committed – The first step to your success is you have to be committed to your goal. This means that you CANNOT give up, no matter how many times you mess up. Take responsibility when you make bad choices that hinder your success. Then, get back up and try again (again, and again, and once again)! Thomas Edison made 1,000 failed attempts at the light bulb before he succeeded. Michael Jordan missed more than 9,000 shots in his basketball career, and Babe Ruth struck out 1,330 times. These are only 3 examples of MANY successful people who failed over and over again but eventually succeeded. If these people had not been committed, they would never have reached their goals. Think about these examples the next time you feel like throwing in the towel and giving up for good on your dreams of being a healthy, fit person. It is all about consistency over time. Those who are living the fit life are those who never give up, no matter how many times they mess up!
Caring – Okay, so you have established a firm commitment to not give up, no matter how many times you mess up – great! Next, you have to CARE enough to see your goal to completion no matter what LIFE throws at you. There is a saying that in life you are in one of three places: going through a storm, getting out of a storm, or getting ready to go into one – life happens! You have to decide, in advance, that you are going to care about your new commitment no matter what life throws your way. Research shows that you are more likely to succeed through the storms of life when you have a system of accountability in place. Having someone to help you “care”, someone who reminds you of your “why” when life gets rough, is one thing that most experts agree is most effective for success. You may have to distance yourself or limit your contact with negative people. People who are not on the same page as you when it comes to your goals are not good sources of accountability. Find someone, or a group, who will hold you accountable and help you care when the time comes where you could not care less. We also have several group classes that are not only fun and very effective, but they too can serve as an accountability system that fosters this issue of caring!
Confident – Confidence comes from success! You need to be confident that you CAN and WILL succeed at your lifestyle change. You can borrow your confidence from others who have accomplished some of the goals for which you are striving. Reading their success stories and looking at their transformation pictures are inspiring ways to build confidence. If they can do it, so can you! Your confidence will soar at each success story you create in your own life. Look back in your life and harness confidence from past successes. Now for your lifestyle change in 2016, it’s time to build on your confidence by making goals that are attainable but stretch you! One small victory after another will eventually lead you to the ultimate success of reaching your goals if you have your journey mapped out appropriately. 2016 can be YOUR year! This can be the year your reach your goals and have a new lifestyle! Don’t get discouraged if you feel you have already blown it by the middle of January.
